Last week we promised a ranking.

Here they are: this weekend’s 21 Halloween and Castanyada plans, ranked by popularity with parents on our site.

Number one isn't a party. The top five are below, and our chestnut-stand map is number 6.

Friday: many schools are off, and Saturday is both Halloween and the Castanyada.

Not doing Halloween? Girona's fair wraps up Sunday: a park full of rides, clown and puppet shows for kids in the squares, and fireworks at 8pm. The fast train takes under 40 minutes.

Weekend weather

Saturday Eixample Festival Ages: 2-8 €8.82

A kids' DJ and face painting inside the old bullring, and one rule about leaving and coming back.

3. Free Castanyada and Halloween Parties at Civic Centers
Friday Citywide Festival All Ages Mostly free

Roast chestnuts, Castanyera stories and a clown circus in a garden hidden inside an Eixample block, plus which ones work for a kid still learning Catalan.

4. Day of the Dead Catrinas Walk at Port Vell
Sunday Port Vell Festival All Ages Free

Catrinas, the flower-crowned skeleton ladies of Mexico's Day of the Dead, stroll the port. Kids in costume can enter a free contest judged on something most Halloween costumes lack.

Saturday Montjuïc Festival Ages: 2+ From €14.45
